Dr. Courtney M. Townsend Jr., MD, is the Robertson-Poth Distinguished Chair in General Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). He is a highly esteemed surgical educator who is also a Professor of Surgery, Professor of Physicians Assistants Studies, and graduate faculty in the Cell Biology Program. Townsend also served as the Editor-In-Chief of the "Sabiston Textbook for Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice" for the 16th through 20th editions. Drucker, MD, Professor of Pediatric and Associate Dean for Medical Education in the Duke University School of Medicine, centered his clinical work in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Previously, he was Director of Pediatric Student Education and Associate Director for Graduate Pediatric Education. Amy G. MacDonald, CNM, MSN, founded the Duke Midwifery Service in 1999. As the first nurse midwife at Duke to provide full-scope care for obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) patients, she grew the Service in the following years to include ten midwifery providers. In this role and throughout her career at Duke, MacDonald provided care for patients, while also mentoring and providing didactic content for Duke medical, nurse practitioner, (NP) and physician assistant (PA) students, as well as residents from Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and OB/GYN in Duke's large teaching hospital setting. MacDonald was the Director of Duke Midwifery Service until 2013, and remained at Duke as a Certified Nurse Midwife until 2021 while also serving in roles including Medical Instructor for Duke School of Medicine and Director of Duke Centering Practice Programs. Tasha Allen, RN, has a passion for primary prevention and education. She is currently a public health nurse and case manager for high-risk pregnancies with the Durham County Department of Public Health (DCDoPH). Allen has worked in collaboration with Duke midwives in a clinical setting since 2004. In 2004, Allen was one of the first DCDoPH nurses to facilitate Centering Pregnancy groups with Duke Midwifery Service at Lincoln Community Health Center, continuing in this role until 2010. Kim Quang Dau, RN, MS, CNM, is a Clinical Professor of Midwifery in the School of Nursing at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF), a Certified Nurse-Midwife at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, the Director of UCSF's Nurse-Midwifery/WHNP Program, and a co-lead for UCSF's Midwifery Mentoring and Belonging Program. From 2007 to 2010, Dau was a Staff Midwife with Duke Midwifery Service, and the Coordinator for the Centering Pregnancy program facilitated in collaboration with Durham County Department of Public Health in locations including Lincoln Community Health Center and El Centro Hispano. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on October 19, 2022 by Josephine McRobbie as part of the Duke Midwifery Service and Durham Maternal Health Oral History Project, which was funded by The Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation Endowment Fund. Duke Moms Affinity Group held their kickoff event as a Duke University Health System (DUHS) affinity group on May 12, 2023 (Mother's Day), but the group had an earlier start. In July 2018, Duke Moms began as a Duke Health Technology Solutions (DHTS) grassroots moms group. In October 2022, they developed a DUHS charter to become an affinity group; the activation process to become an affinity group lasted from November 2022 to February 2023. The Duke Moms Affinity Group strives to fill the gap of knowledge of how to support working parents and parents to be. Julieta (Julia) Giner, a nurse, was born in Bonn, Germany, to a German mother and a Spanish father. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was an infant. Being from an immigrant family, Giner understood that life can be challenging, and this understanding motivated her to work against the unfair stigma against HIV/AIDS patients. When one of her good friends became gravely ill because of AIDS in 1989, Giner knew she wanted to be involved in the development of treatment for HIV/AIDS. Giner started working at Duke Hospital in 1993, initially as a floor nurse in the general medicine. At the time, some of the patients in her ward had opportunistic infections due to AIDS, but wanting to be more closely involved in HIV/AIDS work, she spoke to Dr. John A. Bartlett, the physician running the public care clinic for HIV/AIDS patients. In 1996, Bartlett invited her to apply to become a clinical research nurse in that adult infectious disease clinic, where she worked until 2009. From 2005 to 2009, she worked with Bartlett in Moshi, Tanzania, at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. When she returned to Durham, North Carolina, she worked in a general pediatric infectious disease clinic, where she was still able to see HIV/AIDS patients until she retired in 2020. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on February 5, 2024 by Anthony Zhao as part of the Bass Connections Agents of Change Oral History Project. In the interview, Giner discusses her early friendships within the LGBTQ community; taking care of a good friend with AIDS; her work taking care of HIV/AIDS patients at Duke Hospital; her extensive involvement with the community advisory board; her successes and failures with health education about HIV in Durham, North Carolina; and the unique bond within the clinic staff. The themes of this interview include LGBTQ issues, societal stigmatization, community activism, health education, and advocacy.
