William P. Wilson (1922-2018) was a Professor of Psychiatry and director of the electroencephalographic laboratories at Duke University Medical Center, as well as the founder and original program director of Duke's program for Christianity, medicine, and psychiatry. This collection contains 2 oral history interviews conducted at separate times. Interviews were conducted on January 13, 2010 and February 11, 2010 by Jessica Roseberry. In the January 13, 2010 interview, Wilson discusses his medical career and his memories of Duke's Department of Psychiatry from its early days through his retirement in 1984. In the February 11, 2010 interview, Wilson discusses the establishment of the program for Christianity, medicine, and psychiatry at Duke and the fifteen years he served as the program's head.

Courtney M. Townsend Jr. Oral History Interview, 2022

Dr. Courtney M. Townsend Jr., MD, is the Robertson-Poth Distinguished Chair in General Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). He is a highly esteemed surgical educator who is also a Professor of Surgery, Professor of Physicians Assistants Studies, and graduate faculty in the Cell Biology Program. Townsend also served as the Editor-In-Chief of the "Sabiston Textbook for Surgery: The Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice" for the 16th through 20th editions. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on January 20, 2022 by Taylor Patterson as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the interview, Townsend discusses his background; his decision to become a surgeon; his education and training; his time in the Navy, becoming the Editor-In-Chief for the "Textbook of Surgery" after Sabiston, as well as his experiences in that role; Sabiston's influence on the field of surgery; how Townsend shaped surgical resident education at his institution; the importance of developing a workforce that looks like the population being served; and his memories of Sabiston and his wife Agnes (Aggie) Barden Sabiston.

Kevin W. Sowers Oral History Interview, 2018-2018

Abstract Or Scope
Kevin W. Sowers received his BSN from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and his MSN from Duke University School of Nursing. He began his nursing career at Duke as an oncology nurse. Throughout his 32 year career at Duke, Sowers moved from a clinical to management role. This collection contains 1 oral history interview, conducted in two parts on January 22, 2018 by Joseph O'Connell. The interview traces his career as an oncology nurse and hospital administrator. Sowers discusses his upbringing in rural Ohio, the development of his passion for patient care, and the evolution of his responsibilities as a leader in the Duke University Hospital organization, as well as his decision to leave Duke. Major topics include nursing and gender; oncology nursing as a specialty; mentorship and leadership dynamics; and the changing economics of academic healthcare organizations.

Rebecca Reyes Oral History Interview, 2024

Rebecca Reyes, a social worker, had her journey shaped by her vibrant Hispanic heritage and a deep-rooted commitment to making a positive impact in her community. Reyes witnessed, firsthand, the challenges faced by marginalized groups, fueling her passion for social change from an early age. Raised in a Presbyterian household, she learned the values of compassion, service, and the importance of education, instilled in her by her family. In 1979, Reyes made history as the first Hispanic woman ordained in the Presbyterian Church, a monumental achievement that marked the beginning of her lifelong dedication to social justice. Reyes' career spanned working with the Presbyterian Church to serving as a campus minister at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and, in 2000, she played a pivotal role in establishing Latino Health Services at Duke University, recognizing the urgent need for culturally competent healthcare for immigrant communities. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on January 25, 2024 by Fiorella Orozco as part of the Bass Connections Agents of Change Oral History Project. In the interview, Reyes explores her early life and career, and her role as an activist and social worker at Duke Health. Patricia Bartlett Oral History Interview, 2024

Patricia Bartlett, a clinical social worker, worked with HIV/AIDS patients in Durham, North Carolina, in the early 1980s at Durham County Regional Hospital (now Duke Regional Hospital). In 1988, she began working with Dr. John A. Bartlett's clinic on the Reynolds grant, which aimed to produce research comparing healthcare costs between home care and hospital care for dying AIDS patients. Her fearlessness and general familiarity with governmental bureaucracy became a lifeline for the AIDS patients at Duke. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on January 29, 2024 by Anthony Zhao as part of the Bass Connections Agents of Change Oral History Project. In the interview, Bartlett discusses her care for a friend with AIDS in the early 1980s; her activism for patients not only at Duke, but also Durham County General Hospital; the negative reputation of John Bartlett's HIV/AIDS clinic at Duke; the extensive resistance she met from community organizations; and memorable experiences with patients at Duke.
