Dr. Peter Kent Smith, MD, Chief of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Duke University Medical Center, is a heart surgeon who specializes in coronary artery bypass, grafting, and valve replacement. This collection contains 2 oral history interviews conducted on July 22, 1994 and January 3, 1996 by Dr. James Gifford. Both interviews are included in the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the July 22, 1994 interview Smith discusses his background in research and the operation of his laboratory. In the January 3, 1996 interview Smith discusses his career as a thoracic surgeon, and particularly his work as Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Peter Kent Smith, MD, is a heart surgeon who specializes in coronary artery bypass, grafting, and valve replacement. He graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1977 and completed his surgical residency at Duke University Medical Center (1977-1987) where he was Chief Resident (1986-1987). From 1980 to 1983, he completed a fellowship where he was the AHA Clinical Scientist Awardee also at Duke University Medical Center. Including medical school, Smith has been at Duke for over 40 years, and, since 1994, he has been the Chief of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Smith's research interests are in the effectiveness of the different surgical and medical aspects of treating heart and lung disease. While most of treatments are already very effective, his research seeks to identify new treatments and improve upon existing ones. Smith's research involves individual patients or groups of patients volunteer to advance heart and lung surgery. Many advanced therapies are only available through participation in such research. Smith has authored over 270 peer-reviewed articles, received 22 grants, contributed to 2 books, and presented over 60 conference papers.
In Smith's spare time, he enjoys collecting first edition mysteries and reading.
