Mary Artley worked for the Department of Surgery at Duke Hospital for 35 years. This collection contains 1 oral history interview conducted on December 13, 2019 by Emily Stewart as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project. In the interview, Artley discusses her early life, education, how she came to work for the Department of Surgery, and her memories of the Department of Surgery and Sabiston.

Includes 1 oral history interview with Mary Artley conducted on December 13, 2019 by Emily Stewart as part of the Dr. David Sabiston Oral History Project.

In the December 13, 2019 interview, Artley discusses her early life, education, how she came to work for the Department of Surgery, and her memories of the Department of Surgery and Sabiston.

Biographical / historical:

Mary Artley was born in Dallas, Texas, and moved with her family to Durham, North Carolina, when she was 5 1/2 years old. She had three younger sisters, and her father was a physician at Duke Hospital. Artley attended Lee-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where she received a two year degree from their medical secretary program. After graduating, Artley got a job working for the Department of Surgery at Duke Hospital. She worked for the Department of Surgery for 35 years at which point she retired for 5 years before coming back to Duke to work part time for a physician in the Department of Medicine.
