Elmer Lee Tyrey was a professor at Duke University School of Medicine from 1983 to 2006. He taught in multiple departments during his time at Duke, serving as a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1983-2006), a Professor for the Department of Neurobiology (1994-2006), and an Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy (1987-1989). This collection contains published articles and manuscripts, as well as experimental procedures, notes, and laboratory notebooks concerning Lee Tyrey's research into the neuroendocrine mechanisms that regulate reproductive function through the use of the rat model. The collection also contains materials collected by Tyrey during his times as a professor at Duke University School of Medicine, including medical illustrations, teaching and informational films, publications, and memoranda. Biographical / historical:

Elmer Lee Tyrey was born on October 26, 1937. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois in 1963. Tyrey remained at the University of Illinois to pursue his graduate studies, receiving his Master of Science from the university in 1964 and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1969.
Tyrey joined Duke University School of Medicine as a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1983. Beginning in 1994, he also served as a Professor for the Department of Neurobiology. Tyrey remained in both positions until his retirement. He also taught briefly in the Department of Anatomy as an Associate Professor from 1987 to 1988.
Over the course of his career, Tyrey's research was focused on neuroendocrine mechanisms that regulate reproductive function in the female through the use of the rat model. For his research on Cannabinoid Effects On Female Reproductive Function, he was awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health from 1987 to 1989. He was later awarded another grant from the Environmental Protection Agency from 1997 to 2001 for his research in Developmental Effects Of Dietary Soy Phytoestrogens.
Tyrey received the honor of Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology upon his retirement from the Duke University School of Medicine in 2006.
