Mildred Marguerite Sherwood was born August 26, 1898, in Livingston Manor, New York. In 1923, Sherwood received her Diploma of Nursing from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, New York where she worked under Dr. Bela Schick. In 1926 she took a job at the Harriet Lane Home at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dean of Duke University School of Medicine Wilburt C. Davison recruited Sherwood to serve as pediatrics supervisor in the Howland Ward at Duke University Hospital when it opened in 1930.
During her tenure at Duke University Hospital, Sherwood served as supervisor of nursing services for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) in Hiroshima, Japan from July 1953 to August 1955. At the ABCC, she assisted with the organization's research into the long-term effects of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on survivors. Her colleague, Marion Batchelder, supervisor of operating room services at Duke University Hospital, also worked for the ABCC during this period.
Sherwood remained pediatrics supervisor at Duke Hospital for thirty years until her retirement in 1960. She died April 21, 1966. - Acquisition information:
