Biographical / historical:

Roscoe R. (Ike) Robinson was born on August 21, 1929, in Oklahoma. Robinson graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1954. Robinson completed post-graduate training at Duke University and Columbia University. He was recruited to complete post-graduate training at Duke University by Eugene Stead. At Columbia University Robinson was a research fellow with Stanley Bradley. Following post-graduate training, Robinson joined the faculty of Duke University, where he spent the next 20 years serving as the Director of the Division of Nephrology and the Florence McAlister Professor of Medicine. For five years he served as associate vice president and Duke Hospital's chief executive officer. In 1981 Robinson left Duke and served as Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine from 1981 to 1997. Robinson was vice chancellor for health affairs emeritus and professor of internal medicine at Vanderbilt at the time of his death.
Robinson is recognized for his work in the field of Nephrology, particularly his studies of urinary ammonia excretion, the site of action of diuretics in the nephron, pathogenesis of low-renin hypertension, and single nephron microperfusion. From 1970 to 1988, he was the national consultant in Nephrology to the Surgeon General of the U.S. Air Force. Robinson was a member of the Council of the American Society of Nephrology, where he was president from 1981 to 1982. Robinson was involved with the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), where he served as president from 1990 to 1993 and was the founding editor of their journal "Kidney International" from 1971 to 1984. He also organized the ISN series "Forefronts in Nephrology" in 1986. Robinson was on the editorial board of Archives of Internal Medicine for 10 years. Robinson served on the boards of United Way of Nashville and Middle Tennessee (Chairman 1990-1991), Nashville YMCA, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, Hospital Hospitality House, Duke University Board of Trustees, Montgomery Bell Academy, First American Corporation and Bank, and the Nashville Health Care Council.
During his career Robinson was the recipient of many professional awards and honors, including membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Duke University Medical Center, the John P. Peters Award of the American Society of Nephrology, and inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Robinson married Ann Allen Robinson, with whom he had two children. He died on August 7, 2004.
