Contains audiotapes and transcript of an oral history interview with Herbert A. Saltzman, former director of the F.G. Hall Lab for Environmental Research at Duke, which is now part of the Duke Center For Hyperbaric Medicine And Environmental Physiology.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Herbert A. Saltzman was born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1928. He attended Friends' Select School, Ursinus College, and Jefferson Medical College, graduating in 1952. He served in the United States Air Force in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Saltzman came to Duke in 1958. In 1964, he became the director of the F.G. Hall Lab for Environmental Research at Duke, now part of the Duke Center For Hyperbaric Medicine And Environmental Physiology. Dr. Saltzman has been active in his profession, including service as president of the North Carolina Thoracic Society, 1965-1966; chairman of the Section on Respiration/Pulmonary Function in Hyperbaric Exposures: National Plan for Safety and Health of Divers, 1975; President of the Undersea Medical Society 1978-1979; and chairman of the NHLBI Multi-Center Study: Prospective Investigation of Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis, 1983-1988. He has published widely and is the recipient of the US Air Force Commendation Medal and the Charles Barr Research Award.
