Alfred Gras (1920-2007) was a graduate of Duke University Medical School in 1944. He went into internal medical practice in Newark and Nutley, New Jersey; and Vermont. Includes 1 oral history interview with Dr. Alfred Gras conducted on September 23, 2005 by Jessica Roseberry. Gras discusses his medical education and his experience of being the first student at Duke to receive penicillin.

Biographical / historical:

Alfred Gras was born on May 27, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Norman Scott Brien Gras and Ethel Gertrude Culbert. He attended Duke University Medical School, graduating in 1944.Gras was the twenty-third reported case in the New England Journal of Medicine as a recipient of penicillin, an event which occurred when he was a student at Duke University Medical School. He served as a naval doctor during World War II and the Korean War.
Following his medical training, Gras went into internal medical practice in Newark and Nutley, New Jersey and Vermont.
He married Jean Simonds in 1942. Gras died on January 29, 2007 in South Hero, Vermont.
