Martin Marc Cummings was born in Berlin, N.J. He attended Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, and then attended Duke University School of Medicine, graduating in 1944. One year of his medical school training was spent at Yale. In 1946, he was commissioned by the Public Health Service and continued thereafter to work in government positions excepting a brief time at the University of Oklahoma. Cummings was the director of the National Library of Medicine from 1964 to 1984.
