- Biographical / historical:

Dr. Melvin Berlin was born in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Duke University as an undergraduate, served in the military in Japan, and then graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1953. In 1957 he returned to Savannah, where he operated a private practice. Dr. Berlin worked in private practice for 22 years and also served as a doctor for a high school baseball program, the Savannah Braves. In 1979 he returned to Duke to serve in the family medicine program and also to serve as the first medical team physician for the Duke athletic program, dealing with all aspects of players' health. He retired in 1998, and his lab coat was also "retired" by Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.
