Biographical / historical:

Guy Leary Odom was born in Harvey, Louisiana, in 1911, the son of Dr. Guy L. Odom and Marion Brown Odom. He graduated from Tulane University Medical School with a MD in 1933. He served as a resident at East Louisiana State Hospital from 1933 to 1937. From 1937 to 1943, he was an intern, assistant resident, and resident of neurosurgery and neuropathology at the Montreal Neurological Institute.
Odom came to Duke University in 1943 as a professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Neurosurgery at Duke University School of Medicine. He served as chief of the Division of Neurosurgery from 1960 to 1976 and retired from Duke in 1981. While at Duke, he established a research and teaching laboratory in neuropathology in 1945. Odom also established a brain tumor clinic, which is one of the oldest multidisciplinary clinics for cancer at Duke.
Locally, Odom was a consultant to Watts Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital, Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg, Seaboard and Southern Railway, and Blue Shield for Durham County. He was also a member of the North Carolina Medical Society and the Durham-Orange County Medical Society.
He was active in major neurosurgical organizations, serving as president of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and Southern Neurological Society. He served as secretary-treasurer of the American Board of Neurological Surgery from 1964 to 1969 and as chair from 1969 to 1971. He also served on the Advisory Board for Medical Specialties, National Advisory Neurological Diseases and Stroke Council, Medical Advisory Board of National Paraplegia Foundation, and National Institute of Neurological Diseases.
Odom's honors include membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, American Academy of Neurological Surgery, Society of Neurological Surgeons, and the American Board of Neurological Surgery. In 1977, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Duke Medical Alumni Association. In 1974, he was appointed James B. Duke Professor of Neurosurgery, and the Guy L. Odom Professorship in Neurological Surgery was established at Duke University School of Medicine in 1981. He was also a recipient of the Harvey Cushing Medal of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and an Honorary Member of the Canadian Society of Neurosciences.
Odom married on August 19, 1933, to Suzanne Price (1915-1965) of San Antonio, Texas, and they had three children. Odom married Mataline Nye Council (1915-1994) in 1967. Odom died on September 15, 2001.
