Biographical / historical:

Henry Kamin was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1920 and came to the United States in 1926. Kamin received degrees from City College of New York (B.S., 1940) and Duke University (Ph.D.,1948). During World War II, he served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. He served as the principle scientist Veteran's Administration Hospital in Durham, N.C. from 1953 to 1968. Kamin joined Duke University in 1950 as an instructor in biochemistry. He became a full professor in 1965. Kamin also served as a consultant, member, or chair of various professional committees including the Food and Nutrition Board, Nutrition Review Committee and Dietary Allowance Committee (chair 1980-1985) of the National Academy of Sciences, American Society of Biological Chemists, American Institute on Nutrition, and the American Chemical Society. Kamin was awarded several grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. He was the author of many works on flavones including The Metabolism of Parenterally Administered Glycine (1948), The Metabolism of Parenterally Administered Amino Acids. I. Glycine (1949), Microsomal TPNH-Cytochrome C Reductase (1965), and editor of Flavins and Flavoproteins III, 1971. He was a longtime editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Oxidation and Phosphorylation. He also helped to organize and direct the Flavins and Flavoproteins Symposium for many years. Kamin married Dorothy Lee Lingle in 1943. He was a charter member of a local community organization, the Durham Savoyards.
