Biographical / historical:

Robert L. "Bob" Hill was born on June 8, 1928, in Kansas City, Missouri, to William Alfred and Geneva Eunice Scurlock Hill. Hill attended the University of Kansas, receiving a BS degree in chemistry in 1949 and a PhD in 1954. He worked as a postgraduate fellow at the University of Utah with Emil L. Smith. Hill joined the faculty of the University of Utah in 1956, where he remained until Philip Handler, then the chair of the biochemistry department at Duke University School of Medicine, recruited Hill to join the faculty at Duke in 1961. He remained at Duke for the rest of his career.
While at Duke, Hill served as Chairman of the Biochemistry department from 1969 to 1993, as well as holding the title of Professor Emeritus after retirement.
Hill was involved in and often held other leadership roles in numerous organizations within and outside of Duke. His scientific research was highly regarded and lead to his election to the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was the 1976-1977 president of the American Society for Biological Chemists, now the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and served as a board member for several years. He was also involved in the development of the 1976 Duke Program to Strengthen Medical Science Education, funded by the Commonwealth Fund for four years, which was intended to enhance the education of students pursuing professional medicine.
Beginning in 1974, Hill was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee during the attempted development of the Whitehead Institute for biomedical research. He also served on the Editorial Boards of "Glycobiology," "Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics," and "Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC)." He was appointed Associate Editor of the "Journal of Biological Chemistry" in 1988, and he held this position until October 2012, just a few weeks before his death.
Robert L. Hill died on November 29, 2012, in Durham, North Carolina.
