Biographical / historical:

Steven H. Herman received his BA from the University of Chicago. In 1997 he received his PhD from Duke University. Herman served as the Director of the Duke University Medical Center Smokers' Consultation Service in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Medical Psychology from 1984 to 2004. This consultation service provides bedside nicotine dependence counseling to hospital patients with smoking-related diseases. Herman was instrumental in spearheading efforts in the planning, implementation, and analysis of the efforts to convert Duke University Medical Center into a smoke-free hospital.
Other than his interest in nicotine dependence, Herman's other professional interests include male sexual problems and dysfunctions, psychotherapy and counseling with individuals and couples, clinical sports psychology, and psychological aspects of medical conditions.
Herman retired from Duke University in 2004. He is currently Assistant Clinical Professor Emeritus in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine.
