These materials relate to the career of Oscar Carl Hansen-Pruss, professor of internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center and one of ten original professors of the Duke University School of Medicine in 1930. Materials date from 1918 to 1966.

Biographical / historical:

Oscar C. Hansen-Pruss was born in 1900 in Bella Vista, Peru to Hans Frederick Christian Hansen, Consul of Denmark and Norway, and Helene Maria de Pruss. He attended the German School of Callo at the Frederich Wilhelm University of Berlin, graduated from Instituto de Lima (1916) and University of San Marcos (1919) and then enrolled in Johns Hopkins Medical School. In 1920, he left Johns Hopkins to attend the University of Berlin and the University of Hiedelberg. In 1921 he reentered Johns Hopkins Medical School and received his MD in 1924.
After graduating from medical school, Hansen-Pruss served an internship plus two years as assistant resident in medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. From 1927 to 1930, he taught infectious diseases and hematology at Johns Hopkins Medical School. In the summer of 1928, he was assigned to the Maryland Board of Health as a consult during the polio epidemic. In 1929, Hansen-Pruss was assigned by the Rockefeller Foundation as interpreter to a Turkish Health Commission and traveled throughout the United States and Canada visiting medical schools and malarial control centers. At the same time, he became associate in medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School and visiting physician to Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Hansen-Pruss came to Duke University in 1930 as one of ten original professors of Duke University School of Medicine, and also a visiting professor to Duke Hospital. At Duke, Hansen-Pruss started the Allergy Clinic (1930) and became chief of the Allergy Service. He served as chief of the Syphilology Clinic (1930-1936) and chief of the Hematology Clinic (1930-1946), becoming a full professor of Duke University in 1949.
Hansen-Pruss was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, the College of Allergy, the International Association of Allergists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Experimental Medicine and Biology, and the American Geriatrics Association, and the New York Academy of Science. He acted as a consultant to the Veterans Administration (1940) and was also the president of Southeastern Allergy Association and member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Sigma Psi (Duke University chapter).
In 1929, Oscar Hansen-Pruss married Frances Rutherford Sheppard of Baltimore, Maryland. Together they had one son, Harald Rutherford, and one daughter, Frances Johanna. He died on January 24, 1970.
