Hammond (1936- ), chairperson of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1980-2002, and a small amount of personal correspondence belonging to Peggy Hammond. Materials range in date from 1956 to 2010.

Biographical / historical:

Charles Bessellieu Hammond was born on July 24, 1936 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to Alice and Claude G. Hammond. He attended the Citadel for three years before transferring to Duke. He graduated from Duke with a BS in 1960 and a MD in 1961. Hammond joined the Duke faculty in 1968 and served as chairperson for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1980 to 2002.
Hammond served as the president of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, the American Gynecologic Club, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He was also the director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally, Hammond was a member of the Institute of Medicine and a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
His research interests included reproductive endocrinology and infertility, placental malignancy, menopause, ectopic pregnancy, prolactin secreting pituitary tumors and choriocarcinoma.
In 1958, Hammond married Peggy Adams and they had two children.
