Materials range in date from 1915 to 2016, and some are undated.

Biographical / historical:

Charles Bessellieu Hammond was born on July 24, 1936 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to Alice and Claude G. Hammond. He earned BS degrees from Duke University (1960) and from The Citadel (1961). He earned his MD from Duke in 1961. Hammond joined the Duke faculty in 1968 and became chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1980 to 2002.

Hammond served as the president of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, the American Gynecologic Club, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He was also the director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the Institute of Medicine, a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, as well as serving domestically in the United States Army Medical Command.

Hammond's research interests included reproductive endocrinology and infertility, placental malignancy, menopause, ectopic pregnancy, prolactin secreting pituitary tumors, and choriocarcinoma.

In 1958, Hammond married Peggy Adams and they had two children. Hammond passed away in February 2021.
