Augustus Oliver Grant, born in 1946 in Jamaica, earned the Jamaica Scholarship in 1963 while attending St. Jago High School in Spanish Town. He left Jamaica to attend the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where he earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees. Grant attended the University of California at Los Angeles to study pharmacology, receiving his PhD in 1975. He became a resident in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba (1975-1977). He was a cardiology resident at Duke Medical Center (1977-1980). Grant joined the faculty of Duke's School of Medicine in 1980. In 2007, he became the Vice Dean for Faculty Enrichment. Grant was the first African-American physician-scientist in Duke's cardiology division. One of his primary research interests is the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia.
Professionally active, Grant served as the president of the Association of Black Cardiologists (1992-1994) and President of the American Heart Association (2003-2004). He was the association's first African American president.
From 1986 to 1987, Grant traveled to Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at the University of Saarland. In 2008, Grant received the Gold Heart Award from the American Heart Association, as well as the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Duke Medical Alumni Association. - Acquisition information:
