Biographical / historical:

Catherine Lynch Gilliss was born in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1949. She received a BSN from Duke University in 1971, a MSN from Catholic University of America in 1974, a NP certificate from the University of Rochester, and a PhD from the University of California-San Francisco in 1983. Gilliss was the Chair of University of California-San Francisco's Department of Family Health Nursing from 1993 to 1998. From 1998 to 2004 she was dean of the Yale University School of Nursing.
In 2004 Gilliss was named dean of Duke's School of Nursing and vice chancellor of nursing affairs, positions she held until 2014. Gilliss was the first Duke School of Nursing alumna to hold the position of dean. Under her leadership the school saw a rise in its school ranking, an increase in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, and growth in enrollment. Gilliss also oversaw the creation of a PhD program, the establishment of North Carolina's first doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program, and the launch of the Duke Translational Nursing Institute.
In addition to her faculty appointments, Catherine Gilliss served as the president of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, the president of the American Academy of Nursing, and as a board member of the Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers. She received numerous accolades, including an honorary master's degree from Yale University and a DHL degree from the University of Portland.
Gilliss is married to Thomas P. Gilliss. They have two children.

Contains Medical Center Administrative records. These include records of the officers of the University, as defined in the Bylaws, the deans of schools and colleges, and departments, institutes, and other offices as designated by the President. For a period of twenty-five years from the origin of the material, permission in writing from the director of the office of record and the Medical Center Archivist is required for use. After twenty-five years, records that have been processed may be consulted with the permission of the Medical Center Archivist. (Issued by the Office of the Chancellor, December 1, 1975).
Contains Records of the Board of Trustees of the Duke University Medical Center. These include minutes and supporting documentation of the Board, its Executive Committee, standing and ad hoc committees, reports, studies, and the like presented solely to the Board. Records which have been existence for at least fifty years are available for scholarly research with the permission of the Medical Center Archivist. Access to records which have been in existence for less than fifty years shall be granted only by special permission, in writing, of the Medical Center Board of Trustees.
Collection must be screened for sensitive or confidential materials before being accessed. For further information consult with the Medical Center Archivist.
