Biographical / historical:

The Duke Chapter of the American Association for Men in Nursing (DAAMN) supports the mission of the American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN) to influence policy, research, and education about men in nursing. This organization is an association of nurses and affiliates within Duke University and the Duke University Health System (DUHS) who are interested in increasing the visibility and inclusion of men in nursing. This organization is not only open to men, but to all individuals who stand to support diversity, inclusivity, and equity within nursing at all levels. Membership is open to Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses, nursing students of all levels, and affiliates.

DAAMN first organized at the Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) around 2008 with Dr. John Brion as the founder and first faculty advisor. In May of 2021, DAAMN became an official student group recognized by Duke University. This recognition allows the group a certain degree of university support and sponsorship for activities and funds to support activities. DAAMN hosts monthly socials, open to both men and women at DUSON to discuss ways to promote the presence of men in the nursing workforce, and to plan DAAMN involvement in the community.
