Biographical / historical:

The Department of Cell Biology is one of the eight basic science departments at the Duke Medical Center. The basic science departments are biochemistry, biostatistics and bioinformatics, cell biology, immunology, molecular genetics and microbiology, neurobiology, pharmacology and cancer biology. The Department of Cell Biology focuses on research of the molecular structure and function of cells and their component parts with a vision of determining how cells interact to form embryos, tissues, and nervous systems and to investigate the role of cells in physiology, behavior, and tissue repair and regeneration.
In December 2018, Scott Soderling, PhD, was named interim chair of the department. In March 2019, Soderling was named chair of the department. Brigid Hogan, PhD, served as chair of the department for the 16 years prior.
