Background

Scope and content:

Contains laboratory notebooks for students and colleagues who collaborated with Marc G. Caron on his clinical research conducted at Duke University Medical Center. Materials date from 1980 to 2005.

Biographical / historical:

Marc G. Caron was born on July 26, 1946 in Quebec City, Canada, where he received his Bachelors of Science in biochemistry from Laval University in Quebec City. He later received his PhD from the University of Miami and held a two year postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University from 1973 to 1975. He then served as an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology at Laval University from 1975 to 1977.
In 1977, he returned to Duke University as a member of the teaching faculty at Duke University Medical Center. He became a James B. Duke Professor of Cell Biology with secondary appointments in the Department of Neurobiology and the Department of Medicine. From 1992 to 2004, he also served the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Duke University as a Senior Associate and then later as an Investigator. Other positions held by Caro include the Vice Chair for Science and Research in the Department of Cell Biology, faculty network member for the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, member of the Duke Cancer Institute, and affiliate of the Regeneration Next Initiative.
Caro authored more than 650 publications and served as the editor or editorial board member for several leading journals, including Editor of the "Journal of Clinical Investigation," Associate Editor of "Biochemistry" from 1992 to 2001, and Editor-in-Chief of "Endocrine Reviews" from 1996 to 2001.
Caron's research focuses on the study of the mechanisms of action and regulation of hormones and neurotransmitters and how they might underlie brain and behavior disorders including schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, mood disorders, and addiction. Major accomplishments of Caron and his team include identifying a novel mode of signaling for the brain's dopamine D2 receptors, genetically engineering a "humanized" mouse model with a congenital deficit in serotonin that recapitulates many of the symptoms associated with animal models of depression, and generating the first dopamine transmitter "knockout" mouse that helped to establish the essential nature of the transporter in the maintenance of dopamine homeostasis.
For his research and medical efforts, Caron received the Lieber Prize for schizophrenia research (2013), a Javits Neuroscience Investigations Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (1991), a Bristol Myers Squibb Unrestricted Neuroscience Grant (1999), Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (NARSAD) (2013), the DuPont Prize for Receptor Research, and election as a fellow and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2013, 2015).
