Charles Edward Buckley III, MD (1929-2018), renowned immunologist, was born in 1929 in Charleston, West Virginia. In 1950, Buckley graduated from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a BS in Biology, and in 1954, he graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine with a MD. Buckley served for six years in the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
From 1954 to 1960, Buckley worked at the Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) as an Intern, Junior Assistant Resident, Research Fellow, and Senior Assistant Resident in Medicine, before joining the Duke University School of Medicine staff as an Instructor in Medicine. In his first years as an instructor, Buckley also served as the DUMC's North Carolina Heart Association Research Fellow in Medicine (1960-1961) and a Research Associate in Duke University's Department of Biochemistry (1961-1963). In 1968, Buckley received a Research Career Development Award from the U.S. Public Health Service. Buckley remained a professor at the Duke University School of Medicine for the remainder of his career, advancing to Professor Emeritus in Medicine and teaching classes in the Department of Microbiology-Immunology.
In addition to teaching students, Buckley oversaw student researchers and residents in the DUMC Allergy-Immunology Laboratory. Buckley used this laboratory for both patient treatment and research on volunteer subjects, with the goal of increasing allergen vaccine efficacy. Using allergen test data, Buckley experimented with computer programming to generate medical notes and analyze large quantities of data.
Buckley served as leadership in many professional organizations. He served as president of the Southeastern Allergy Association, the North Carolina Thoracic Society, and the North Carolina Lung Association. He held active membership with many more societies. He spoke regularly at the International Congress of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, and served on committees for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
In his spare time, Buckley enjoyed conducting genealogical research for his family and supporting student-athletes at Duke. Charles Edward Buckley III died on June 29, 2018. He was married for 63 years and is survived by his wife, Rebecca Hatcher Buckley, four children, and two grandchildren. - Acquisition information:
