Biographical / historical:

William H. Briner was born January 22, 1926, in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, to Lewis E. Briner and Ruth L. (nee Stine) Briner.
Briner received his Pharm.D. from Temple University. In 1955 he completed a hospital pharmacy residency at the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in Baltimore, Maryland, and became a staff pharmacist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1957 he established and served as chief of a separate radiopharmaccutical service at NIH. Briner worked for the NIH in a variety of roles for more than 15 years, finally becoming director of the Clinical Center before retiring from the organization in 1970. Briner joined the faculty at Duke University School of Medicine as assistant professor of radiology and director of radiopharmacy in 1970. While at Duke, he worked in the field of nuclear pharmacy--a specialization he helped to establish--and also worked in radiopharmacy, performing extensive research on the half-life of radioactive pharmaceuticals and coordinating other large projects. Among these projects were a partnership with North Carolina State University in the development and use of fluorine-18, consultation on the construction of the Bell Building, and the establishment of the first nuclear pharmacy lab. Briner retired from Duke with emeritus status in 1998.
In addition to the variety of professional positions held throughout his career, Briner was an active member of the pharmaceutical community, serving on committees for organizations such as the World Health Organization, Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the advisory committee on radiopharmaceuticals to the FDA, as well as publishing in journals and speaking at conferences. He was recognized for his pioneering work in the radiopharmaceutical field with the Society of Nuclear Medicine's Distinguished Service Award and the American Pharmaceutical Association's Award of Excellence.
Briner was married to Elizabeth Hunter. They had two children. Briner died on November 6, 1999.
