Roland Frederick Becker was born on August 12, 1912, in Methuen, Massachusetts. Becker graduated from high school in 1930, then attended Massachusetts State College, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1935 and his master's degree in 1937. From 1935 to 1937, Becker taught psychology at Massachusetts State College. He received a PhD in anatomy from Northwestern University in 1940, and during his graduate studies he was worked as an assistant in anatomy from 1938 to 1947. Upon earning his PhD, Becker remained at Northwestern as an instructor from 1940 to1944, an associate professor from 1944 to1945, and an assistant professor from1945 to 1946, during which he taught and directed research during World War II. Becker was an associate professor (1947) and chairman of Business Administration (1947-1948) at University of Washington School of Medicine, then the director of the Neurological Division at Daniel Baugh Institute of Anatomy at Thomas Jefferson Medical College from 1949 to 1951.
In 1952, Becker became an associate professor of anatomy at Duke University and remained at the university until 1969. While at Duke, he worked to establish a new medical school for Chieng Mai University in Thailand. Becker left Duke for Michigan State University (1969-1975), and then East Carolina University (1976-1978), where he served as Dean in 1978. He became professor emeritus of anatomy and cell biology upon his retirement from East Carolina University in 1978. During his career, Becker was a member of Sigma Xi, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association of Anatomists, and the Cajal Club.
Roland Frederick Becker married Florence Kingston Courtis on September 8, 1936, in Massachusetts. They had two children. Becker died on April 12, 2007, in Pitt County, North Carolina. - Acquisition information:
