Dr. Pamela Susan Douglas, MD, a cardiologist, specializes in diagnostic imaging of the heart. Her research has been instrumental in setting standards for the application and interpretation of echocardiograms. Douglas is the Ursula Geller Professor of Research in Cardiovascular Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Duke University, as well as the Director of the Multimodality Imaging Program at Duke Clinical Research Institute. Biographical / historical:

Dr. Pamela Susan Douglas knew from a young age she wanted a career in the field of science and medicine. She received her MD from Virginia Commonwealth University (1978). During her medical training, she gravitated toward intensive care medicine and, ultimately, cardiology. She was a Medical Resident at the University of Pennsylvania (1978-1981) and a Fellow in Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania (1981-1984). From 1984 to 1990, Douglas served as assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1990 to 2000, she was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. In 2000, she became cardiology head and Dr. Herman & Ailene Tuchman Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Wisconsin in 2000. She joined Duke in 2004 where her roles include being the Douglas is the Ursula Geller Professor of Research in Cardiovascular Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Duke University, as well as the Director of the Multimodality Imaging Program at Duke Clinical Research Institute.

Douglas specializes in diagnostic imaging of the heart. Her work as a clinician and researcher has centered on the echocardiogram. Ultrasound imaging of the heart can be a powerful, non-invasive diagnostic resource. However, this tool is only as good as the way in which it is implemented in the medical setting. To this end, Douglas has been a champion of and major contributor to medical imaging standards and protocol. Her research has been instrumental in setting standards for the application and interpretation of echocardiograms.
